Halloween Update

Dear Den 7 Community:

Reminder--no meeting tonight due to Halloween.

The theme this month is "Cubs in Shining Armor." The themes will be used to emphasize chivalry and service.

If you can keep your eyes open for some cardboard, we will use it to make some shields. Please send it to the 11/7 Den Meeting with your son. Two largish pieces will be needed.

The location for the 11/7 meeting is in flux at the moment, as the school is booked for election day. I'll let everyone know where we will be meeting in the next few days.

Best regards,

Ken

Den 7 Update

Dear Den 7 Community:

Recent past:
Very small turnout for the Haunted Hike on Saturday (3 total cubs). I don't know if I'd recommend it for a future den outing, and most certainly not if it is raining as hard as it was when we went through the experience.

Upcoming:
Reminder that we will have our pack meeting tomorrow evening. Den 7 is responsible for set-up and take down, so please make sure your son is at Davis School by 6:10.

Don't let them forget their little boats, either, as we will be sailing them during the pack meeting.

End of week:
From my experience taking young people camping, I think it is going to be too cold to go out this weekend....I generally set a minimum temperature of 40F for a first campout, and the low is expected to be well below that.

With the cancellation of the campout, we had decided to go swimming at the Norris Center on Friday evening as an alternative activity. Let's shoot for 6:30 as the starting time...and let me publicly ask Jane (who swims there regularly with her family) to share any particular details (costs, etc.) with the rest of us. We can make this a more family-inclusive experience than the campout would have been able to be.

One week down the road (31 October):
Halloween--no den meeting, so have fun, safely.

Two weeks (7 November):
Election day--school is not available. I have a couple of ideas for a den activity--I'll report back soon.

I look forward to seeing everyone tomorrow at the pack meeting.

  2. Haunted hike--meet at Davis School tomorrow--6:30. Note the fee--cheaper for Cubs in uniform
  3. Pack meeting on Tuesday--Den 7 is in charge of set up/take down, so please try to arrive by 6:10 to get things into place.
I'll have more on next week's den campout (or swim???) by pack meeting time.

Den Update for October 17

Dear Den 7 Community:

Just back in town (8:25 am today after four days on the road--and no internet access (the perils of cheap hotels!).

--Den meeting Tuesday at 6:30, Davis School
--Treat and Den Meeting help from Ann W.

--We will be constructing our boats for next week's rain gutter regatta

--Popcorn selling from 5:00-7:00 on Friday the 20th, at the local Jewel--see Ann's previous note for details

--For those who wish to take part--a reminder that we will take part in the haunted hike on Saturday. Meet at Davis School parking lot at 6:30...form a caravan/car pool up to Camp Big Timber. Please again note the admission reduction for cub scouts in their uniforms.

--Campout still being planned for next week. I'd like to finalize numbers of participants at the next pack meeting (9/24). Jane Siarny is planning an alternative activity (swimming at the Norris Center) for Friday night if the weather doesn't cooperate. I'll ponder what "cooperating" weather looks like and put it down in writing.

I'm going to go sleep now...it is a long drive from Texas. :-)

Den Update, Week of October 8, 2006

Dear Den 7 Community:

All updates logged at http://pack108.blogspot.com/

Updates for the coming week:
--Den will meet on Tuesday at 6:30, Davis School Community Room
--Mrs. Harshbarger has volunteered to bring treats. (Thank you!)

Next week (10/17) we will have a den meeting as usual

The following week (10/24) we will have a pack meeting on that Tuesday night. (6:30, in the Davis School Community Room).
--The bear den is responsible for setting up and taking down the chairs, so please bring your son to the Community Room by 6:00.
--Per the email from Mrs. Stubbs, we will hold the Raingutter Regatta during the pack meeting, rather than on the 27th of October as previously scheduled.

Den Campout, October 27
--We will camp at Blackwell Forest preserve. Bring your own brown bag dinner for Friday…we will help the cub scouts cook breakfast on Saturday morning.
--We need one adult per cub scout youth. Since we are camping in the youth camping area, family members who are not part of the youth organization (i.e. non-scout siblings) are not allowed to camp in the area.
--I’m asking each family participating in the campout to bring one craft or game to play or do during the campout, so that we can keep them focused on something “productive” when we need them to be. 
--We will need to be out of the campground by noon on Saturday the 28th.
--Each family participating needs to bring their own camping gear (tent, sleeping back, eating utensils, etc.)

***

Long term reminders...

Hopefully you are all visiting your son's Bear handbook and completing some of the acheivements in the book as we work our way to completing the Bear award by February.

***
As we meet on Tuesday evenings, and the 31st is Halloween, we will not meet as a den on the 31st. Happy Halloween, and don't let them eat too much candy on that night.

***
On a Halloween-related note, the local scout council sponsors an activity called "Haunted Hike." It's a hike through the local scout camp with a Halloween theme to make it interesting. You are certainly encouraged to do this if you are looking for a family adventure later this month. October 3 Den Meeting

Dear Den 7 Community:

Thanks for the good turnout at the pack meeting last Friday. Special kudos to all the cub scouts who made their animal posters for display--it was great to see such good work in action.

I've attached the meeting agenda for this week's den meeting. Mr. Mikleson and Mrs. Gannett are helping this week, so it should help to give some guidelines as to what we are doing--and to help be prepaerd. In particular, Mr. M--see Acheivement 22d--the "rope toss" activity. If anyone is having trouble reading it, I can send as a *pdf document as well.

Mrs. Eshbaugh is supplying the treats this week--thank you kindly.

The theme this month is "Cub Scout Shipbuilders." We will have some nautical-themed activities this month, and will culminate with the Rain Gutter Regatta on the 27th.

Note also that our den's date for a campout was also scheduled for the 27th. Choices are difficult to make, but I would suggest that if you can't make it to the den campout, then by all means attend the raingutter regatta. If weather turns bad, then we will cancel the camping experience and all attend the regatta.

***
Our den has received a supply of popcorn and have been encouraged to sell it at a local store. Mr. Jurkowski is acquainted with the manager of the local Jewell, and is going to see if he can arrange for some sales time during one evening over the next few weeks. All this amounts to is selling popcorn from a table in front of the store for an hour or so. As soon as more is know, it will be reported.

***
Hopefully you are all visiting your son's Bear handbook and completing some of the acheivements in the book as we work our way to completing the Bear award by February.
