Reading Program

Dear Den 7 Community:

The local scout council has started a program to encourage cub scouts to read. The documentation is shared below, but the bottom line is that for every 500 minutes of reading, the cub scout may be recognized.

Here is the material as presented to me....if your son takes part in it, let me know the week before the pack meeting, and I will see to it that the appropriate segment is ordered.

Best regards,

Ken

Three Fires Council Reading Program

This is a year-round program to promote reading. Reading dates are from September 1 – August 31st.

This is a Council wide award program to recognize Scouts and their families for spending time reading. The Scout keeps a log of his reading time. For every 500 minutes of reading time, they receive recognition. The reading requirements are as follows: All reading materials pertinent to the values of Scouting. This could be books, magazines or newspaper articles. The subject should be any age appropriate material that reflects the ideals of Scouting. Examples include – nature, conservation, sports, history, fiction, adventure, camping, good deeds, religious, academic, Scouting books, etc. Reading time is not limited to the Scout reading on his own. The time spent reading to or with others, i.e. parents, siblings, grandparents, anyone else, counts towards their total. There are multiple opportunities for various reading projects.

  • For the first 500 minutes, the Scout would receive the initial starting 3” patch for the reading program.
  • With each additional 500 minutes they would receive a reading program segment patch to go around the big patch. For a general reading of 500 minutes, a Scout would receive a book segment, #72.
  • If a Scout subscribes to Boy’s Life magazine, which also promotes reading, and spends 500 minutes reading it, they would receive the Boy’s Life segment, #56.
  • If the Scout spends 500 minutes reading with/to family, he would receive the Family segment, #199.
  • If the Scout spends 500 minutes reading to those who are sick, disabled or shut-ins, he would receive the Good Turn segment, #201.
  • If the Scout spends 500 minutes reading religious materials, he would receive a religious segment. (There are 2 or 3 options; this is at the discretion of the Pack) #2(church), #4(religious), #5(praying hands), #159(Christian: fish)
  • If the Scout visits a newspaper office and learns about how the news is printed and reads a newspaper, he would receive a newspaper segment, #115.
  • If a Scout spends 500 minutes reading nature and conservation materials, he would receive the Nature segment, #167.
  • If a Scout spends 500 minutes reading Sports and/or Fitness materials, he would receive the Sports segment, #66 or the Physical Fitness segment, #65.
  • If a Scout spends time writing at least 8 letters to a Pen Pal and reading the letters received from the Pen Pal, or if the Scout writes Thank You notes to the people he sold and delivered popcorn, he would receive the Stamp/Envelope segment, #187.
