Webelos Den Weekly Update

Dear Webelos Den Parents:

We will have a pack meeting at Davis School on Tuesday, 6:30 PM as usual.

Our den's responsibility is to set up and take down the chairs....if you could help your sons arrive by 6:15 PM, we will take care of it very quickly.

* * *

Please let me know if your son will be camping on Friday. Given the uncertainty due to the weather, I'll reserve another camping date for two weeks later, in case the weather causes a cancellation of the campout and acting on our alternate plan (swimming at the Norris Center on Friday evening).

We had a small turnout for the tree planting, but the members of the den who were able to make it planted 75 trees, so it was a project well done.

See you on Tuesday,

Ken

Service Project on Saturday : : : Tree Planting

Dear Den Parents:

We had a great turnout and great weather for the LNT/Forester Scavenger Hunt this evening.

This weekend is our Forester Tree Planting/Service Project. I have the following committments from people at this point:

Micky C--probably yes
Keith D--no word as yet
Zachary K--probably not
Marshall K--yes
Mac K--yes
Clayton M--probably not
Timothy S--no
Ken W--yes

As a last reminder, we will leave Davis School at 9:30 Saturday morning. When it is over, we will return and I will see that the boys have a snack before they return to you....they should be back to you by 2:00-2:30 PM on Saturday.

If you're looking to get out and stretch your legs a bit on Saturday, a second adult/driver is always appreciated.

Next Tuesday is our pack meeting......and next weekend (2-3 May) is our spring campout, so we have a full calendar ahead of us.

Weekly Update (2 of 2 for this Week)

Dear Webelos Den Parents:

I'd like to schedule another outdoor hike/event for this Tuesday.

If you could have your son at Davis School by 5:55 PM, we will depart at 6:00 PM for our hiking destination. I'm going to head out this afternoon and put together a nature scavenger hunt so that they can meet some award requirements and burn up some energy at the same time.

I note that the weather is forecasting scattered showers, so if it is raining, we will meet in the school gym as usual, with an alternate indoor program. We will gather at our usual 6:30 PM meeting time if we are experiencing rain at 5:30 PM.

Meeting help: Gannet/Corvino family

Treats: Wahab family

Thanks, as always, for your support of your son's participation in Cub Scouting.

Best regards,

Ken

Weekly Update (1 of 2 for this Week)

Dear Webelos Den Parents:

Here is some information regarding an earth Day Event scheduled for next Saturday.

PLEASE LET ME KNOW BY TUESDAY IF YOUR SON WILL BE ABLE TO PARTICIPATE.

I need to contact the volunteer coordinator at the Forest Preserve to let her know how many people to expect.

I'll have another note later this weekend regarding what we will be doing on Tuesday--I'm hoping that we might meet around 6:00 as we did two weeks ago and have another outdoor experience, given that the weather is changing in our favor. Please look for a note from me on Sunday.

Best always,

Ken

Webelos Den Weekly Update

Dear Webelos Den Parents:

Our weekly meeting will take place at Davis School, Tuesday at 6:30 PM.

We will continue work on the naturalist/outdoorsman/forester/LNT awards.

Please have your sons check on the status of their mealworms on a regular basis. When the carrot grows too dry, they should replace it with a fresh carrot or apple slice, as the mealworms obtain all of their water from this. They should also look for changes, as the mealworms metamorphose into pupa then into grain beetles.....and then back (via eggs) into mealworms again. I'll be asking them about their mealworms on a weekly basis as part of their work on the naturalist badge.

Looking ahead to Saturday, April 26, we will help the Kane County Forest Preserve with a tree planting service project. I will follow up with reservations with them, but I need to confirm the scouts who are participating at our next den meeting. The event should last from approximately 9:30 AM to 1:00 PM on Saturday the 26th. One additional driver would be helpful, too.

The following weekend, we will have our den campout at Elburn Forest preserve. The estimated cost is $6 for a snack on Friday, and breakfast and lunch on Saturday. I'll look for participation confirmations at the pack meeting that week.

For a family/scouting activity on May 10, you are encouraged to visit the Scout-O-Rama at Catigny. Tickets are $4 per person, or the whole family for $8. This is a chance to see scouting in action from throughout the entire Three Fires Council.

This week's meeting help: The Kampen Family. The treat: The Siarny Family.

Best regards,

Ken

Resident Camp and Day Camp

Dear Pack 108 Parents:

I made the pitch for Cub Scout and Webelos Resident Camp at the last two pack meetings, but now registration time is approaching, so if you wish to commit, now is the time.

For Cub Scouts (and first-year Webelos), I recommend the program at Indian Mound Reservation, Oconomowow, WI (July 10-13). This is best experienced with a parent and child.

I am preparing the reservation documents for them for them at the moment. Based on the fee for one youth + tent ($110)/one adult + tent ($55) per family, the fee is $165, made out to "Milwaukee County Council." If you don't wish to use the tent/cot/mosquito netting the camp provides, you can knock $20 off the fee for a total of $145. Boys will need a health history (as will adults) to be shared upon arrival at camp.

If you can bring a check to me at Pack meeting on April 27, I will make the reservation.

The leader guide is available here: http://www.milwaukeeboyscouts.org/site/c.huLSJ6MUKxH/b.1630543/

Second year webelos have an easier registration system for the camp held from June 29 - July 3: simply sign up/register at http://www.neic.org/registration/calendardetail.asp?orgkey=947&ActivityKey=377714

* * *

If you want a day camp experience, these are also available. I recommend making a decision by dens to take part in the programs offered by the local Three Fires Council. Details are listed here: http://www.threefirescouncil.org/Camping/cp_cub_scout_summer_camp_index.htm

The closest day camps are among those listed for the Fox Valley District. These are held at Good Templar Park in Geneva.

* * *

I hope that one or more of these are of interest to you or your sons....boys join scouting because they want to go camping, and these represent some excellent ways to get started with a organized staff to help you make it happen.

Best regards,

Ken
