Pack Activities, May 27

Dear Pack 108 Parents:

Let this serve as a reminder that our next pack meeting will take place at 6:00 PM on Tuesday, May 27, 2008.

We will meet at LeRoy Oaks Forest Preserve (on Dean Street in St. Charles, west of Randall Road). We will be at the far end of the forest preserve, and have a shelter reserved for us.

Our program:

6:00 – 6:30: Space derby

Space Derby Comments:

· The space derby rockets are easy to construct, but it needs to be done over two or three days, to allow glue and paint to arrive.

· Parents of each child will wind rockets up for launch 75 turns

· Simple process: launch four rockets during each heat; race the fastest rocket from each heat against each other; continue until the three fastest rockets have been determined.

· Trophies will be awarded to the three fastest rockets/rockets that travel the furthest

6:30 – 7:15: Potluck Dinner

· Tiger Den: Dessert

· Wolf Den: Salad

· Bear Den: Side Dish

· Webelos Den: Beverages

· The pack will provide hotdogs, buns, condiments, and paper products

IMPORTANT NOTES REGARDING FOOD:

· IMPORTANT NOTE 1: We have severe nut allergies among the boys in the pack, so please do not bring items that contain nuts.

· IMPORTANT NOTE 2: We want to feed you! Please let me know how many people to expect from your family, so that hotdogs, buns, plates, and condiments can be purchased in sufficient quantities

7:15 – 7:30: Award Presentation

7:30 – 8:15: Investiture of new scouts and advancement to the next level in scouting for continuing Cub Scouts

Mr. Conover will have information regarding the June pack event

IN CASE OF RAIN: we will meet at Davis School at 6:00 for space derby, indoor picnic, and awards. I will send notice at 4:00 PM on Tuesday if we need to meet at Davis. Keep your fingers crossed for good weather!

Webelos Den Weekly Update

Dear Webelos Den Parents:

We will meet at Davis School from 6:30 - 7:30 on Tuesday.

This will be our last den meeting of the school year, so we will tie up our spring projects.

Reminder that our next pack meeting will take place at LeRoy Oaks on May 27. Please see the flier that went out at the last pack meeting for confirmation. If anyone needs a rocket kit to assemble and launch at the pack meeting, please let me know so that I can bring one for you to the den meeting this week.

My schedule tells me that the Wahab family will be present for meeting help, and that the Kampen family will provide the treats for this week.

* * *

We have a few pack events scheduled over the summer, so please mark your calendar and keep your eyes open for email messages alerting you to the activities. The pack calendar is available at this link.

* * *

I will also try to schedule one activity each month just for the webelos den...just to keep our scouting muscles in good shape.

* * *

As we move into the final months as cub scouts, we will be working to complete the arrow of light award. Part of this requires that cub scouts learn and recite (from memory) the Boy Scout Oath and Scout Law. That information is located in your son's Webelos Handbook. While we will practice these each week, please encourage your son to spend some time this summer practicing it so that we can confirm what he learned when we start up with weekly meetings in the fall.

* * *
If you are thinking about adding scout pants/shorts to your son's webelos uniform (which are the same as for a boy scout uniform), there are some changes being made, so put that purchase on hold for the time being. The new look is here.

* * *

One more pitch for webelos resident camp. You can sign up here.

* * *

My thanks for all who were able to attend the camp out over the weekend--I think it was fun and successful, and the rain was kept at bay as much as possible.

Best regards,

Ken

Camp Out this Weekend

Dear Webelos Den Parents:

Well, maybe the "third time is the charm."

With the weather finally cooperating, we will have our camp out at Binnie Forest Preserve as planned.

Please let me know by 7:00 PM today if you and your son are able to make it, so that we can arrange for food. Cy will be making the purchase this evening, so we need to know to ensure everyone is fed. I know that some folks were having trouble with this new date, but hopefully things have changed in favor of camping.

Please be there on Friday to get your tent pitched and ready for a program start time of 7:30 PM.

Best,

Ken

Webelos Den Weekly Update + Camp Out Plans

Dear Webelos Den Parents:

I hope that some of you had a chance to visit the Scout-O-Rama over the weekend....it was a really well-done event, with over 100 things to do and visit. It offered a nice glimpse into the possibilities that scouting offers.

Our meeting this week will take place at Delnor Woods (on Rt. 25, just north of Rt. 64) in St. Charles. If you can drop your son off, the other folks helping with the meeting will bring them home when it is over.

Hopefully you have started your space derby rockets....they require some initial gluing as the first step, so they do not qualify as a last minute rush to completion sort of craft. Thanks again to Mr. Kampen for constructing the launch pad for the rockets.

Speaking of the rockets, we will launch them at our final pack meeting of the program year, Tuesday, May 27, at LeRoy Oaks. Per the flier that went out at the last pack meeting, the webelos den families have been asked to bring drinks to the dinner.

Please let me know if your son will be camping on coming Friday. The ten-day forecast looks a little more promising than recently, so we will plan on having the campout. I will make the call for go/no go Thursday afternoon, if the chance of rain looks to be too great. We will camp at Binnie Forest Preserve in the Dundee/Carpentersville area. I will bring a flier with information to the den meeting on Tuesday.

I trust you are all well, and Happy Mother's Day to the moms who receive this note.

Best,

Ken

Cub Scout Program Opportunity :: Scout-O-Rama

Dear Pack 108 Parents:

With the weather turning nice, we have many opportunities to be busy, so here is one more.

Every few years, the local scout council hosts an event called a Scout-O-Rama. It displays for the public the interesting things that one can do as a scout. This is the first Scout-O-Rama since 2005, and is taking place at Catigny.

If you are looking for a way to spend a couple of hours on Saturday and see what takes place in other cub scout packs and boy scout troops, this is a nice way to see what the possibilities are.

There is an entry fee of $4/person or $8/family that is the same as the standard parking cost at Cantigny. This allows all the proceeds to support scouting in the local area.

Details are available here: http://www.threefirescouncil.org/

I'll be spending time promoting the next National Scout Jamboree from 12:00 - 2:00, so stop by and say hello.

Have a good weekend--and I hope you've all started designing your space ships for the space derby.

Best regards,

Ken

Webelos Den Weekly Update

Dear Webelos Den Parents:

It looks like the rain we did receive showed some wisdom in reading the weather forecast and postponing the camp out for a couple of weeks--hopefully the weather will cooperate more on that date.

This week we will meet at Wheeler Park in Geneva (it is located on Rt 31, south of the intersection of Roosevelt and Rt. 31). Please drop off your sons there, and we will start the meeting at 6:30 PM.

For boys that can make it, we will complete work our Naturalist and Forester activity badges this week.

My notes remind me that the Mikleson family will be present at the den help; the Dwyer family will provide the treat this week.

Take care,

Ken

Pack Swim

Dear Pack 108 Parents:

As noted at the Pack meeting on Tuesday, the Webelos Den's planned camp out was threatened by stormy weather on Friday. Given the continuing 70% chance of thunderstorms, we elected to postpone our campout until later in May.

As a substitute, we will have a den swim Friday night at the Norris Center, and would like to open the invitation up to any members of the pack who would care to join us.

The open swim begins at 7:00 PM and lasts until 8:30 PM.

Take care,

Ken

Campout Postponed

Dear Webelos Den Parents:

The weather forecast has been pretty consistent this week: 70% chance of thunderstorms tomorrow:

http://www.weather.com/outlook/homeandgarden/schoolday/local/60174

The weather farther west is consistent with this, with winds and heavy cloud cover in IA, NE, MO, and KS....all headed our way.

I think it would be best if we postpone the campout until May 16-17. Based on than contingency, I have already reserved a campsite for us for the den on those dates.

We will have as an alternative a pack swim, at 7:00 PM at the Norris Center.

I'm sorry to have to postpone this, but I think that cub scout campouts ought to tale place in nice weather....we can save camping in the rain for next year as boy scouts.

I appreciate everyone waiting for the final answer.

If we don't have the promised thunderstorm tomorrow, I'm going to go outside my house and scream.

Ken
