Parade: Float Construction

Where: 1119 Horne St, Saint Charles, IL 60174

When: 9:30 AM, Saturday November 29

Float theme: Cub Scout winter campsite theme....A tent will be needed, wood for a lantern lit mock campfire, fishing poles w/mock frozen fish for ice fishing, various x-mas decor including white felt for snow effect & working flashlights/lanterns for all attending....Set up can take place on Saturday, prior to the parade (maybe 1 hour)...We need a set up site & volunteers to be offered/coordinated...Please remember to keep your boys dressed appropriately for the weather.....Thanks so much......ALSO: holiday lights and a generator to run them (Jay Schmid has volunteered his)

Additional parade information: We are group number 56. We have been assigned a staging position on 4th Street between Illinois Street and Walnut Street.

Line up time: The requested line-up time is between 4:15 and 4:30 PM. That proved to be too long last year; I would recommend that boys not arrive until after 5:00, and still be dressed warmly. Unlike the St. Patrick's Parade, where we walk, the boys stand still on the float, which makes things seem a bi over-cold.

The parade will start off at 5:30 p.m. sharp! Please be sure everyone in your unit knows your line up number the day of the parade. Parade Marshals will be available at each intersection to help you get located and ready. They will be wearing orange vests.

I would recommend gathering at the Baker Park at the end of the parade, so that you can pick up your son at the close of the parade.

Thank you to all who put the pieces of this event together--I will see many of you tomorrow morning at set-up and tomorrow evening at the parade.

Best regards,

Ken

Cubsicle (last call)

Dear Pack Parents:

This is the final information I have for participation in Operation Cubsicle. According to my records, these boys were signed up by their parents at the pack meeting and submitted payment by this evening.

Keep in mind, that you are welcome--and encouraged--to take part in the event. You will need to sign your son up at the Three Fires Scout Council office at 415 North Second Street. If you do this, please let either Mr. Conover know if you are attending on 3 January or me know if you are attending 27 December. This way, we can submit a complete roster and make sure that all the boys in the pack can take part in the event together.

All participants need to complete page 1 of this document. Please be sure that your coordinator (Mr. King or Mr. Conover) has your copies, so that check-in at camp may be expedited.

Webelos Den -:- Monday, December 1

Dear Webelos Den Parents:

If you would let me know by Sunday afternoon whether you will be attending the Troop 46 Webelos/Parent Open House. This will allow me to respond to Mr. Mengler, Scoutmaster for Troop 46 [His message is below].

I would anticipate gathering at the Davis School parking lot and departing by 6:40 PM to make it to Lily Lake in time for the 7:00 meeting.

Just let me know if your son will attend--yes or no--and if you will attend--yes or no.

I would encourage you to take part in this meeting, as it will give a better introduction as to how Boy Scouting is different from Cub Scouting, and how the role of the parents evolves.

As a consequence, there will be no meeting on Tuesday, December 2 in deference to this meeting. No need for treats, either. :-)

Happy Thanksgiving to everyone....

Ken

Just a reminder that the Troop 46 Webelos Open House is this coming Monday, December 1 at 7pm at Grace Lutheran Church in Lily Lake. Please pass on the information to the appropriate leaders in your respective Packs. Your packs are the units that we primarily anticipate having some visitors from.
We'll do a hands-on program for the Scouts from 7 until 8:30 with a separate parent orientation.
Any questions let me know, and I look forward to seeing you all next Monday.

Pack Activity Reminders

Dear Pack 108 Parents

Reminder 1. If your son is interested in taking part in Operation Cubsicle, please drop off a payment at the King's house (1401 South Seventh Street) before Tuesday evening. I will be assembling the registration materials Tuesday evening after 9:00 PM, and drop off payment Wednesday morning.

At the pack meeting, a number of parents signed their sons up to participate, but did not submit payment at that time. I will register only those boys (and parents) for whom payment has been submitted. The "early bird" fee is $15/youth and $7 adult. Checks should be made out to THREE FIRES COUNCIL.

If you elect to participate at a later date, you may register your son (and yourself, too) at the Three Fires Council office as long as they have room to participate.

Reminder 2. Look for information pertaining to the Electric Parade later this week.

Best regards,

Ken

Seeds of Kindness

Greetings!
One last reminder for the Scavenger hunt to gather needed items for Lazarus House and Salvation Army. Let's have the scouts in uniform but do dress for the weather. You can print out the attached flier and I will have copies for everyone. This is a fun way for the scouts to participate in supporting families who are less fortunate.
Starting a noon on Saturday, we will spread out in teams and collect items for about 1 1/2 hours and rendezvous back at Davis about 1:30. Bring wagons and carry all bags to collect the items. A support vehicle should follow along with each team to assist in transportation of collected items. This is a pack/family event and let's show our spirit this season and spread our seeds of kindness tomorrow.

Webelos Information

Dear Webelos Parents:

I am unable to get the time away next week to implement the planned--and much-postponed--Webelos train trip to Chicago. I've been given new responsibilities at work starting next semester, but the actual work is beginning now, and I can't flex-time my way out of this. I'll offer my apologies to the scouts when I see them next, but this give you more family time this way.

Looking ahead--toward times where I can lead an event: Troop 46 has an open house for Webelos and their parents on Monday, December 1. That will serve as our den meeting for the week. They troop leaders ask that parents come to the meeting so that you understand what Boy Scouting is and how it is different from Cub Scouting--and to give you this information first-hand. Joining a troop is a family decision, so it's important to know as much as possible to make the best choice for your family. I will seek confirmation from you that you can attend the meeting.

I know that some other boys in the den have expressed interest in Troop 13. We will visit them during a troop meeting in December as well so that the you and the boys in the den can make informed choices.

Take care, and have a great holiday.

Cubsicle

Dear Pack Families:

Just to follow up with our registration for Operation Cubsicle: I will submit the registration documents in my possession on Wednesday, November 26, on my way to work.

If you signed up but were not able to pay at the pack meeting, please drop payment off at the King's house (address below) by Tuesday night, November 25. I will only be able to submit paid registration forms.

Scott Conover will serve as the point of contact for those participating on 3 January.

Ken King will serve as the point of contact for those participating on 29 December.

At this point, we have 15 scouts and 9 parents who have committed to participate, setting a pack record. My thanks to everyone who works to make this happen for our sons.

You may, should you decide later, have your son participate in the event, but you will need to sign up at the Three Fires Council Office (415 North Second Street, St. Charles) independently of the pack. Let either Scott (if you decide to attend on January 3) or me (if you decide to attend on December 29) know if you are participating, so that we can coordinate rides and such.

I hope many of you can attend the "Seeds of Kindness Scavenger Hunt." Contact Jay Schmid if you have any questions.

Best regards,

Ken

Pack Meeting, November 18

Dear Pack 108 Parents:

Just a reminder that our monthly pack meeting will take place on Tuesday, November 18, 6:30 PM in the Davis School Community Room.

In addition to game and awards, we will have important information to share on the following topics:

  • Electric Parade
  • Popcorn Sale
  • Seeds of Kindness Scavenger Hunt
  • Operation Cubsicle

To piggyback on Carolyn's recent email to the Bear Den, Operation Cubsicle is coming up in December and January.

Operation Cubsicle is a one-day Cub Scout Day Camp event held over the winter break from school.

Participation Dates are on either December 29 or January 3.

Cost: $15 per cub scout and $7 per adult leader, which includes craft supplies, a badge, and lunch. The check should be made payable to "Thee Fires Council."

This is an early notification, but the event sells out every year.

I will be attending with the Webelos Den on 29 December; one leader from the Bear den has committed to attending on 3 January. At least two adults are required for participation from each pack during each session, so if you are looking for a winter adventure with your sons, put this on your calendar.

All participants need to complete and bring with them a medical history form (page one from this document).

Sign up will take place at the pack meeting, and detailed participation information will be shared with registered participants.

Webelos Den Outing, November 15

Dear Webelos Parents:

Thanks again to Mr. Dwyer and Mr. Kampen for the terrific construction activities. I think that all the boys in the den who were present this week or last week are ready to own their own nail guns.

Regarding the attachment: I will respond to the Scoutmaster for Troop 60 tomorrow evening at 6:00 PM.

These are the boys whose parents have indicated that thier sons will attend. Please note that Ken, Clayton, Keith and Mac need to take part in a Boy Scout Troop + Webelos Den activity to earn the Arrow of Light. This is the third activity I've identified....I don't anticipate on taking part in any more, as I am running out of Saturday afternoons. :-)

We will depart from Davis School's parking lot at 9:25 to make it to Camp Big Timber on Saturday morning, November 15. There will be other adults present at the event, so I do not need a second parent to attend, unless they would like to.

Best always,

Ken

Webelos Den Meeting, November 11

Dear Webelos Den Parents:

We will meet on Tuesday, November 11, 6:30 PM at the davis School Community Room.

We will continue work on the Craftsman Activity Badge.

Meeting leadership is by Mr. Kampen and Mr. Dwyer. The King family is responsible for the treats.

* * *
Looking ahead--one of the requirements for the Arrow of Light Award is to take part in a Boy Scout Troop + Webelos Den outdoor activity. As of the Troop 13 hosted event today, the following boys have met that requirement: Marshall, Micky, Zachary, and Tim.

The last event of the three that I made arrangements for will take place on Saturday, 15 November. I mentioned this in my last email message, and send home a flyer last week. Please let me know by Tuesday if your son will be able to take part in that event.

Have a good weekend,

Ken

Leader Meeting Updates + Den Leader Notes

Dear Pack Leaders:

Looking ahead to next week (Monday, 10 November).....there are a few program-related things I would like to talk about:
--electric parade (status)
--operation cubsicle (participation)
--pack meeting games and such (i.e., recruiting a group of three "game czars")

Long range:
--pinewood derby in January
--Blue and Gold Banquet in February

I will report for Tina on the state of the pack treasury

I imagine that we need to discuss popcorn distribution...and what makes the most sense

I've had a few questions come my way regarding the following
--parade status
--previous mention of "Toys for Tots"--what's up?

Jay was interested in the pack organizing a drive for Lazarus House to collect needed items.

Michele was interested in meeting at Chili's so that we can have nachos/salsa...here's the one on the west side of town; I think it is closer/faster to get to than the one on the east side of St. Charles.

Batavia-Chili's
491 N Randall Road
Batavia, IL 60510-9263
Distance:4.83Miles
Driving Directions

6:30 PM start...

Den Leaders:

It seems to be turning into scouting afternoon here, email-wise.

Jane wanted me ask you to submit your badge orders one week before the next pack meeting, which would make it on 11/11 for the pack meeting on 11/18.

She also requested that you order the segments, if you require them, by specific name/number, so that she can get you what you need. If you do not have a sheet with the segments on them, let me know and I will pick one up at the scout shop and have it at the leader meeting on Monday.

If you have any boys receiving a rank advancement (bobcat seems possible at this point), please let me know so that I can recognize them at the pack meeting.

Please take a look at the duty schedule for the pack meeting to see if your den has a responsibility: http://faculty.roosevelt.edu/King/personal/scouts/cubs/2008-09/calendar_2008-09.htm

Dear Webelos parents:

Flaming Arrow Webelos Den Meeting, November 4

Dear Webelos Den Parents:

We will have our Webelos den meeting at the King's house (1401 S. 7th), at 6:30 PM on November 4. The school is closed to us, due to the elections.

We will commence work on the Craftsman Activity Badge.

The boys have been invited to take part in the Troop 13 Turkey Bowl and Family Potluck on November 9. Please let me know by Tuesday whether you and your son would like to participate. This is one of the requirements for the Arrow of Light Award. We will have one more troop-den event available to meet this requirement. I will forward number of participants to Jay Schmid so that Troop 13's leadership can prepare for our participation. Details are here.

During the D303 break this month, I would like to finish the Art Activity Badge and Traveler Activity Badge with a trip via train to the Art Institute in Chicago. If any of you would be available during that week to help chaperon such a trip, let me know.

All messages are available at http://pack108.blogspot.com/

Best regards,

Ken
