Cub Scout (Summer) Camp:

Dear Den 7 Community:

Looking way ahead to summer camp for the cub scouts, here is what I judge to be our best option:

Indian Mound Reservation: Cub Scout Resident Camp, 12-15 July.

More information will be forthcoming after the first of the new year, but it might be helpful to get these dates on people's summer calendars.

Best,

Ken

December Den Doings

Dear Den 7 Community:

The theme this month is "Cub Scout Stars." Our next regular den meeting will take place on Tuesday, December 5, at Davis School.

I'll share my list of meeting helpers and those who signed up to provide a treat. That is, when I get home I will. :-)

Looking ahead:
--Monday, 18 December. One of the activities this month is a field trip to a planetarium. Admission at Adler Planetarium is FREE on Mondays (shy shows have a charge, however). We would need a couple of drivers (parents) to support such an adventure. Let me know your interest at the next den meeting. Some details. http://www.adlerplanetarium.org/plan/groups.shtml#scouts
--Tuesday, 19 December. Part of the month's theme is service, and per Jane's invitation, we will meet during the day on December 19 at the Siarny's house. We will prepare meals for Lazarus House.
--Friday, 29 December: Operation Cubsicle. We took part in this last year, and had some fun with it. It is a day camp program--in the winter. It has a mixture of indoor and outdoor activities. Cost is $15 per scout, $7 per adult chaperone. As with the proposed Adler trip, we need adults to chaperone and provide transportation. Reservations are due on 12 December (Pack meeting night). Details here

Thanks to Ann Wahab for donating the cardboard that became the castle at the pack meeting last night.

Thanks also to Bryan Ferry for taking on the popcorn kernel job....he was in his garage with a laptop computer on more than one night this fall, organizing popcorn distribution for the whole pack.

Everyone should also (save for some folks who did not come into the pack meeting last night) the list of advancement requirements that we covered during our den meetings. For the bear award, the requirement is to complete 12/25 requirements...so see which ones are of interest to your son, and have fun with them over winter break. My goal is to have this completed by the Blue and Gold Banquet in February.

Den 7 Updates--Thanksgiving week, 2006

Dear Den 7 Community:

RE: Tekakwitha Woods event. Save for the folks who told me they were going out of town, no one except for Jane expressed interest in participating. Regardless, I'm still in favor of going, and I'll be out at TW to lead a hike/nature study experience. I'll be at the Tekakwitha Woods parking lot at 10:30 on Tuesday morning, rather than meeting at the school at 9:30.

No word yet on the organizational issues related to the parade later this week. Please watch this space for further updates. (http://www.dtown.org/SiteSolution.taf?_UserReference=5493456956B85FCA44D647C6&_pi=869)

Pack Meeting Notes:
The pack leaders also elected to have a uniform inspection that night as well. Badge placement is in the handbook, as well as here: http://www.scouting.org/forms/34282.pdf

At the pack meeting next week (28 November), I want to pass on a reminder that we will be performing the opening and closing, so please have you scout to Davis School by 6:15 so that we can have a final practice.

The script for the opening and closing is below. Please have your young knight read through his line a few times before the meeting.:

OPENING: KNIGHTS OF THE ROUNDTABLE

Den Leader: Hear ye! Hear ye! The Kingdom of Cub Scouting requests your presence before the Royalty of the Land! (Royal trumpet sounds) Prepare for the entrance of the Knights.

Boys stand at the front of the room holding shields. Tape opening ceremony instructions inside the shields. Let boys carry homemade shields and cardboard swords. Carry flags for the dens. Play marching music

Den Leader: Knights! Hold your swords at attention while the America flag is brought up.

Reader 1: The flags, shields and banners of kings were symbols of the monarchy. Fleur-de-lis, lions, trees, symbolize strength, purity or the place of the king.

Reader 2: Our banner has three colors, and stars as symbols.
Reader 3: Our colors show red for bravery, white for purity and blue for loyalty.
Reader 4: The stripes stand for the thirteen colonies, and
Reader 5: The stars stand for all the states.

Reader 6: Knights and courtiers of the Kingdom, please stand for the symbol of our land. Color Guard, Forward March. Pack 108, Salute!

=====

Color Guard Pauses at Flag Stands

Reader 6: Color Guard, Post the Colors. Will the audience please join me in the Pledge of Allegiance?

Audience recites the Pledge of Allegiance.

Reader 6: Two!

Den Leader: Color guard, return to your seats. The audience may be seated.

CLOSING: KNIGHTS OF THE ROUNDTABLE

Cub Scouts with shields return to the front.

Cub Scout 7: Nights of old stood straight and tall as they pledged to defend all things good and just, and to always strive to do the right thing. Just as the knights made a pledge to do all that is good, so do our modern-day knights, the Cub Scouts.

Cub Scout 8: Will the audience please rise? Cub Scouts, raise your hand in the Cub Scout sign and repeat the Cub Scout Promise.

All: repeat Cub Scout promise

Cub Scout 8: Color Guard, retire the colors. Audience, salute!

Color guard moves the flag to the back of the room.

Cub Scout 8: Two.

Cub Scout 8: Mr. Cubmaster, the pack is yours.

Cub Scout 9: U.S. Flag

Cub Scout 10: Pack Flag

Weekly Update: 14 November Meeting

Dear Den 7 Community:

This week's meeting will take place at the school, as usual.

No one signed up to be helper this week; the Siarny family is providing the treat.

Popcorn....if you can stop by and collect your popcorn, it would be helpful. If you can't get it today, let's plan on collecting it from my house after the meeting on Tuesday.

Enjoy the rest of your weekend,

Ken

Tekakwitha Woods

Dear Den 7 Community:

Looking ahead to the week before Thanksgiving (no School), I've reserved time and a do-it-yourself program at Tekakwitha Woods for Den 7.

The program will last from 10:00 - 12:00 on November 21. We will make transportation arrangements as the time draws closer, but I wanted to get it on our collective calendars.

Best,

Ken
