Cub Scout Resident Camp

Dear Pack 108 Parents:

As mentioned at the pack meeting earlier this week, there are a number of options available for cub scout outdoor experiences this summer--the one I am organizing is Cub Scout Resident Camp.

I'd like to get a sense of the number of participants by late next week. As noted below, this is generally best approached as a parent-child experience. There are also some minimum adult leadership requirements noted below, so if you up for an adventure in the woods, this is your ticket.

If you could let me know your interest in having your son attend by next Saturday (and your interest as well), that would be great.

Look for other camping options, including day camp, coming your way shortly.

Best regards--and enjoy your spring break...

Ken

Cub Scout Resident Camp

What:
Cub Scout Resident Camp (4 days/3 nights)

Who:
All interested Cub Scouts. For those cub scouts who have attended day camp previously, this is a great opportunity. It might be “too much” for those who have either not been away from home before, or who have not taken part in the day camp offered in the St. Charles area.

Where:
Indian Mound Reservation, Oconomowoc, WI (120 minute drive from St. Charles. IMR has a Cub World camp with a lake, castle, pirate ship, mine and programming delivered by a full time camp staff.

Why:
To keep the ‘outing’ in scouting, and because it is fun.

When:
July 12 – July 15

How Much:
$120 ($110 per scout if paid by 4 April) and $45 per adult leader/parent

Payment Deadline:
April 4 for “early bird” deadline; 1 May for Pack 108 planning purposes

Leadership:
Organized by the Milwaukee County Council Boy Scouts of America.

Pack Leadership: 2 adults for first ten youth; one additional adult for each multiple of five cub scouts over the first ten (e.g. 11 cub scouts = 3 adults; 21 cub scouts = 5 adults, etc.) If your son has not spent time away from family in the past, I would recommend attending with him.

Ken King, Cubmaster, has committed to attending this activity with his den, and would welcome participation by other scouts and parents.

Den 7 Update

Dear Den 7 Community:

One more opportunity has come up for April adventures....

***

Who: Cub Scouts in Den 7

What: Field Trip to Nick’s Pizza—tour of kitchen and make your own pizza

Where: Nick’s Pizza, 990 S Randall Rd., Elgin, IL 60123

When: Tuesday, April 17, 4:00 PM. We will gather at Davis School and depart from there at 3:30 PM. I would anticipate that we would be home by 6:00 PM

Why: Theme for the month is “Cub Café,” and this will allow scouts to see how a real restaurant operates.

How: I’ll be able to provide transportation for six…if another parent with a flexible schedule can provide transportation for four more boys, we will be all set.

In addition to the tour, the boys will make their own one-toping pizza and get to take home a bag of peanuts.

Since this is a Cub Scout event, please encourage your son to wear his Cub Scout uniform to school that day, so that we will look like a den when we arrive at Nick’s.

How much: $4.50 per boy (half the usual price and tax-free)

Thanks: to Joy for learning about this and investigating for us.

Best regards,

Ken

Den 7 Updates

Dear Den 7 Community:

Just a few extra details for you regarding the pack meeting and upcoming den events, supporting next month’s Cub Café theme:

  • March 27: Spring Break field trip to Blue Goose (free)
  • April 4: Early Bird payment deadline for CS Resident Camp (see a previous email for details—handout will be shared at pack meeting—$110 per youth, $45 per adult), July 12-15
  • April 7: Climbing adventure at Elgin Climbing wall. $14 per cub scout. I need the releases from you if you would like your son to take part, per the requirements of the Elgin Centre.
  • April 17: (tentative) Field Trip to Nick’s Pizza Restaurant, for a make-your-own pizza experience (thanks to Joy for the legwork on this)
  • Either: 4-5 or 11-12 May—den campout. Cy is organizing the details on this, so that we can have a campout, hopefully without rain.

I think that’s good for now…things get busy in the spring!

Ken

Pack 108 Pack Meeting Reminder

Dear Pack 108 Community:

Pack Meeting Highlights for March, 2007

  • Theme: “Baloo Skies”
  • Displays from the last month’s activities
  • Setup and take down: Bear Den
  • Opening and closing: Webelos Den
  • Skit: Wolf Den
  • Games: “Snowball Toss” and “Dress for the Weather”
  • Recognition for your son’s work over the last month
  • Reminders and updates regarding camping opportunities for the summer scouting program (local events: http://www.threefirescouncil.org/Camping/cp_cub_scout_summer_camp.htm)

Detailed note: FOS. FOS is “Friends of Scouting” and is the local scout council’s annual fundraiser to support scouting in the community at large. It typically takes about $130-150 dollars per scout per year to support the operation of the service center in St. Charles, the employees who work there, and the various camping properties owned by the local scout council.

A card has been published with your name on it, and while no contribution is expected, all contributions are appreciated by the leadership of the local council. When you receive your card at the start of the meeting, please consider a contribution. At the end of the meeting, a representative from the local council will present briefly on the points above and collect the cards, whether a contribution was offered or not. Recovering the cards at the end of the evening simply provides evidence that everyone had a chance to make a contribution.

Reminder that all information is available at http://pack108.blogspot.com/

Ken

Den 7 Weekly Update

Dear Den 7 Community:

Notes for this week:
  • We will continue working with the weather theme this week. We will construct a combination rain guage and wind vane. Please encourage your sons to continue collecting weather information with their equipment.
  • Treats: Wahab Familty
  • Help: Rudnicki Family

Looking ahead:
  • Pack meeting on 20 March—the bear den will set up and take down the chairs.
  • 27 March den meeting is during the D303 spring break. I have scheduled a tour for the den at Blue Goose grocery during the morning as the beginning for the “Cub Café” theme. I know it is during the week, but with notice, hopefully most boys can make it.
  • 3 April den meeting: we will continue the theme of Cub Café by making meals for Lazarus house.
  • 7 April (Saturday)—I’ve reserved time and space at the Community Climbing wall in Elgin. The cost per scout is about $14 each. Please mark this down—if your son hasn’t had a chance to try rock climbing before, it is a lot of fun. I’ll have more information shortly so that you can get this onto your schedules.

Thanks for Ann's help in organizing the parade yesterday...I arrived back in St. Charles yesterday after my class, around 3:15 PM, and judging from the traffic, it looks like participation in the parade was good. :-)

Best regards,

Ken

Den 7 Meeting Update for March 6

Dear Den 7 Community:

We will begin our investigation and exploration of weather this month.

Mr. Harshbarger has kindly assembled some pre-fab weather collection tools....we will put them together during the next couple of den meetings. Please send your son to the meeting with a hammer, so that he can assemble the weather equipment.

I will also bring some weather tracking sheets to the den meeting, so that the cub scouts can track the weather for two weeks. As part of this, the boys will earn their weather belt loop, for those who keep track of such things.

This week:
Meeting help: Kampen Family
Treats: Siarny Family

Looking ahead to the end of the month, spring break for D303 is the last week of March. I'd like to organize another field day during that week as we did last year. I will be checking through the council office to see if we can use camp big timber again, in exchange for a service project as we did last year. I'll keep everyone posted.

I look forward to seeing many of you at Sci-Tech today.

Best regards,

Ken
